I just watched Slumdog Millionaire. Why so late at it? Well.. i did not have the motivation to watch it, until i read the papers today to find out that Danny Boyle is making another movie, based on the book "Maximum City - Bombay Lost and Found" by Suketu Mehta! Yes, he is doing that! Maximum City happens to be one of my favourite books... and i thought it would be interesting to see what
kind of a movie he makes, considering the fact that this book may strike a chord with any true blue Mumbaite.
Coming back to the former movie, i dont think this is the best movie i've seen yet. Thus it manages to strengthen my faith (or, rather, the lack of it) in Oscar winning movies of late. I thought this would just have been an average movie if made in Hindi or any other language, and would have definately lost out if contended in the "Foreign Language Film" category. I say this because language has never been a barrier while i watch movies. I never mind watching foriegn language films with subtitles. Movies in Cantonese/Mandarin have been my favourite for reasons beyond martial arts... Intense acting, the perfect balance in romance, comedy as well as action sequences being some of the reasons. (A blog post on some of my favourite Cantonese movies may come later)
All in all, "Slumdog.." is not a bad movie, but i would not rate it more than 3/5.
I am not a movie critic by any means! This is just an opinion. And i would be eagerly awaiting the film version of "Maximum City" From what i see, no one can do justice to the book if not made in a form closer to a documentary. And hey... what do you think he'll call this movie? "Slumdog City"? I hope not...
